How To Manage A Sales Team

As a leader of a sales team, you need to have different types of styles of leadership to effectively manage your team. It is important for a leader to take the appropriate measures to ensure that the sales team achieves their target.

You must be a very approachable person for effective management of the team. There will be times where you will need to hold your sales team members and yourself accountable for our actions and statement.

If you are new to being a manager, you will often make mistakes. Admit that sometimes you make mistakes and let the team know that you acknowledge that. Avoid behaving like you have solutions to all problems, some members of the team will try to come up with problems so that they can see you solve them. As manager you can easily create a bond of mutual respect with your team if you create transparency between you and your team.

One of the mistakes you might do, especially if you were previously a sales person is telling your team what to do. Your aim of giving them directions would be to let them have the solution that you think is best in the situation you are in. However, when you giving instructions to your sales team every time there is a problem, you will kill their willingness and ability to come up with solutions to problems. Rather, creating a sales team, you will be cloning yourself.

You might think that cloning yourself is a great idea because you have succeeded, however, it might be a trap. Having a team whose members have different ideas on how to solve a problem would be better. To effectively manage your sales team, you can use some styles. Each style should be used at its right time and place.

One approach that you can use when faced with a problem is the consultative approach. Let the sales team members give their ideas on what you should do. You should not be the one to say what you do. See what they have in mind concerning an account, a customer or a situation. Know how your team want to go about the problems they are facing and how they want you to help them.

If the team members are not used to the kind of management you are using, the might fail to respond well at first. This will most likely happen if your predecessor was a directive manager. However, keep encouraging them to feel free and come up with solutions to challenges they are facing. As you operate, you will see how they think and operate and at the same time they will appreciate you for teaching them how to fish rather than just feeding them.
